Plot
In 1952 Romania, two nuns living at the Cârța Monastery are attacked by an unseen presence while searching for an "artifact". The surviving nun, Sister Victoria, flees from the attacker and jumps out of a window, hanging herself, as the attacker, a demonic entity dressed as a nun, appears outside her room. Her body is discovered the next morning by Frenchie, a man living in a nearby village and tasked with transporting supplies to the nuns, despite never actually seeing them.
The Vatican learns of the incident and dispatches troubled priest Father Burke to investigate along with young novitiate Sister Irene. The pair travels to Romania and meets with Frenchie who leads them to the abbey. At the abbey they discover that Sister Victoria's body has inexplicably moved from where Frenchie originally moved it, fresh blood appears where she was initially found, and a strange key on her body. Entering the chapel outside the abbey, they find themselves unable to enter the actual abbey and encounter the abbess, who informs them that the nuns are having a vow of silence for the night but they can return the next day, offering lodging at the nearby convent. Frenchie is attacked by a possessed nun corpse as he returns to the village, but manages to escape. Irene mentions how she has various visions including that of a nun. Additionally, Burke reveals that a boy he exorcised died during the exorcism and he has been grieving ever since. The demonic entity terrorizes the pair that night and Burke is rescued by Irene after being trapped in a coffin. They discover to their horror that the coffin is filled with several books about the occult.
The next day, Irene and Burke return to the abbey but Irene can only enter as it is cloistered. She meets some of the other nuns and learns that they are praying constantly, swapping in shifts to keep evil at bay. One of the nuns, Sister Oana, reveals the abbey's history: it was built as a castle by a duke obsessed with the occult and the dark arts during the Dark Ages. The duke summoned a demonic entity via a rift he opened in the catacombs but was killed by Vatican troops who captured the castle and sealed the rift with an artifact that contains the "blood of Jesus Christ" before Valak could fully emerge. The effects of the bombings during the Second World War caused the rift to open again, unleashing the same entity, which has taken the form of a nun and whom several nuns have spotted at night. Meanwhile, in the chapel, Burke identifies the entity as Valak after reading the books from the coffin and discovers the abbess's body is being controlled by demonic forces who shift into the boy who died during the exorcism.
In the village, Frenchie discovers that the evil from the abbey is plaguing the village after learning of the suicide of a young girl, and decides to head back to the abbey to try and save Irene and Burke. Irene is attacked by Valak and experiences more visions that night. She enters the main part of the abbey where several nuns start to pray to fend off Valak. The group is attacked, suffering large casualties and a demonic force carves a pentagram into Irene's skin. Hearing the chaos, Burke tries to enter the abbey to save Irene but is attacked by a possessed nun corpse. He is saved by a shotgun-wielding Frenchie and the pair enter the abbey to rescue Irene. Upon reaching Irene, the group discovers that none of the nuns were real and they were all visions from Irene. They also learn that Sister Victoria was the last nun alive and had actually hung herself to stop Valak from possessing her body and spreading evil.
Theorizing that Valak can only be stopped if they seal the damaged rift with the blood, the trio enter the catacombs and retrieve the blood vial with the key Sister Victoria had before searching for the rift. The group is attacked and separated by Valak and the ghosts of the dead nuns. Irene is lured into a pentagram and possessed by Valak. Frenchie uses some of the blood to free her. Valak emerges, incapacitating Frenchie and throwing Irene into a flooded chamber that contains the actual rift. Burke is wounded by the ghost of the boy who died as Valak starts to drown Irene. As Valak inspects Irene's body, she spits the blood at the demon, banishing it before using the blood to seal the rift. After Frenchie rescues and resuscitates Irene, he reveals his real name as Maurice to Irene and the trio leave the abbey. However, Maurice is revealed to be partially possessed by Valak via injuries he sustained during the fight.
Development
Development
On June 15, 2016, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema announced a spin-off film to 2016's The Conjuring 2 titled The Nun. The initial script for the film was written by David Leslie Johnson, and produced by Peter Safranand James Wan.[4] On February 17, 2017, it was announced that Corin Hardy had signed on to direct The Nun with a new screenplay from Wan and Gary Dauberman.[5] During the filming of Annabelle: Creation, Safran revealed that The Nun would chronologically come first in The Conjuring franchise's shared cinematic universe, making it as a further prequel to The Conjuring series and Annabelle series. He said, "We have a board that we created that has what we hope will ultimately be our series of movies. We have it in chronological order, so we can keep track of where it all happens."
Casting
Casting
On April 5, 2017, Demián Bichir joined the film's cast as a priest investigating a nun's mysterious suicide.[7] Taissa Farmiga was cast shortly after in the title role.[8] Corin Hardy later said that he initially did not want to cast Farmiga due to her being the sister of The Conjuring star Vera Farmiga, but changed his mind when he saw her auditions, "I watched 100 auditions for this role and she had some kind of presence outside of her own body that is evident, and she's phenomenal."[9]Bonnie Aarons was then set to reprise her role as the "Demon Nun" character Valak from The Conjuring 2.[10] Charlotte Hope, Jonas Bloquet, and Ingrid Bisu were subsequently announced to star, rounding out the main cast.[11][12][13]
Filming
Principal photography for the film began on May 3, 2017, at Castel Film Studios in Bucharest, Romania, with Maxime Alexandreserving as cinematographer.[14] Scenes were filmed in the Palace of the Parliament building in June, for a fee of €5,000 per hour.[15]Filming also took place at the Corvin Castle in Hunedoara[16] and in Sighișoara, Transylvania.[17] Hardy announced on his social media accounts that production wrapped on June 23, 2017, after 38 days.
Music
Music
The original musical score for The Nun was composed by Abel Korzeniowski[19] and was released on August 31, 2018, by WaterTower Music.
Release
The Nun was initially scheduled to be released in the United States on July 13, 2018, by Warner Bros. Pictures.[20] In February 2018, it was announced that the film's release date would be pushed back to September 7, 2018.[21] On June 13, 2018, a teaser trailer was released.[22] In August 2018, a short advertisement for the film was removed from YouTube due to an unskippable jump scarethat violated the platform's "Shocking Content" policies.
Box office
As of September 7, 2018, The Nun has grossed $22.4 million in the United States and Canada, and $32.1 million in other territories, for a total worldwide gross of $54.5 million, against a production budget of $22 million.[1]
In the United States and Canada, The Nun was released alongside Peppermint and God Bless the Broken Road, and was originally projected to gross $32–37 million in its opening weekend.[24] By the week of its release, estimates had been increased to $36–45 million from 3,876 theaters.[25] It made $22.4 million on its first day, including 5.4 million from Thursday night previews, both the highest of the Conjuring films.[26]
Critical response
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 29% based on 103 reviews, and an average rating of 4.5/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "The Nun boasts strong performances, spooky atmospherics, and a couple decent set-pieces, but its sins include inconsistent logic and narrative slackness."[27] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 46 out of 100, based on 30 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[28]Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "C" on an A+ to F scale, the lowest of the franchise.
On August 12, 2017, Wan discussed a possibility for a Nun sequel and what its storyline may cover: "I do know where potentially, if The Nun works out, where The Nun 2 could lead to and how that ties back to Lorraine's story that we've set up with the first two Conjurings and make it all come full circle."
